Is Ayahuasca Legal in the USA?
Ayahuasca contains DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine), a Schedule I controlled substance under U.S. federal law. That makes ayahuasca ceremonies illegal nationwide, regardless of the setting or intent.
A handful of religious organizations have pursued exemptions under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), but these are narrow, conditional, and legally fragile:
- Only DEA-approved churches qualify — not general healing or wellness spaces
- Exemptions apply to sincere religious practice only and do not automatically protect participants
- Legal status can be challenged or revoked at any time
- Importing the plants themselves exists in a separate legal gray area
Soul Quest Ayahuasca Church in Orlando, Florida operated under a claimed RFRA exemption and was still found guilty of violations. For participants, that legal climate creates real risk — even as a guest.
Our ayahuasca retreats in Colombia operate in a fully legal framework. No exemptions needed, no ambiguity.
USA vs Colombia: How the Options Actually Compare
A week-long retreat in the USA with genuine indigenous leadership, fresh medicine, real screening, and structured integration is nearly impossible to find legally. In Putumayo, Colombia, that is simply what MahaDevi does.

The Medicine Problem: Why Paste Is Not the Same as Fresh
Even U.S. retreats operating under religious exemptions face a supply problem. Banisteriopsis caapi and Chacruna (Psychotria viridis) are not grown in the United States. The medicine has to be imported — and transporting DMT-containing plant material across international borders is its own federal issue.
Most U.S. retreats receive the medicine as a concentrated paste later reconstituted with water. Think of it like reducing a fine wine to syrup, shipping it, and adding water before serving. The active compounds survive. The preparation does not.
What participants often notice with reconstituted paste:
- Harsher taste and stronger nausea
- A cruder, less nuanced experience
- Medicine that may be months or years old by the time it is served
At MahaDevi, Taita Miguel grows and prepares the Yagé fresh in Putumayo for each retreat. The medicine is alive, local, and made by the same hands that have been doing this for twelve generations.
Cooked Yagé and Crudo: Something You Cannot Find Anywhere Else
MahaDevi is one of the only retreat centers in Colombia offering both traditionally cooked Yagé and Crudo, the rare cold-brew preparation. Most retreats worldwide serve cooked brew only. Learn more about our medicine.
Cooked Yagé
Fire-brewed over many hours. Deep, physically intense, and what most people picture when they think of ayahuasca. Strong bitter taste, demanding process, and an experience that moves at the medicine's pace. The brew the world reveres for profound, soul-level healing.
Crudo — Cold Brew
Prepared without fire, which changes its character entirely. Mild taste, gentler on digestion, less nausea, and a clearer, more luminous quality of experience. Crudo must be consumed fresh and cannot be transported. It does not exist outside of Colombia.
Taita Miguel and the MahaDevi Team
MahaDevi's ceremonies are led by Taita Miguel Mavisoy, a healer from the Camsá tribe in Putumayo whose lineage spans twelve unbroken generations. He was first introduced to Yagé at six months old by his parents — both respected healers — and was serving the medicine by the age of 14.
He is known internationally for his warmth, his openness to sharing his tradition with people from around the world, and the notably sweet taste of his brew.
Taita Miguel is supported by master healers from the Inga, Kofán, and Siona tribes, connecting participants to four distinct indigenous lineages of Putumayo. For every two participants, one dedicated team member is present throughout the retreat.
The MahaDevi team also includes facilitators with over 400 ceremonies of lived experience, ICEERS-trained integration support, and clinical psychologist advisors.
A Team Built Around You

What Authentic Ceremony Actually Involves
Ayahuasca in its traditional form is not a psychedelic session. In the Camsá tradition of Putumayo, the ceremony is a complete healing framework. These elements are not decorative — they are the ceremony.
- 1Energetic CleansingMedicinal plant baths before the medicine is served to prepare the participant.
- 2Traditional PrayersPrayers and invocations by the Taita opening and holding the ceremonial space.
- 3Icaros — Healing SongsSung specifically for each participant throughout the night.
- 4Consecrated SpaceThe ceremonial space held and protected by the healer from opening to close.

Getting to Putumayo: Closer Than You Think
Most Americans are surprised by how short the journey is. From Bogotá, a short domestic flight connects to Mocoa in Putumayo. MahaDevi handles airport pickup and all in-country transportation — for most Americans the total travel is comparable to a domestic cross-country flight.

Why Putumayo, and Why It Matters
Not all ayahuasca retreats in Colombia are equal, and location is not just a detail. Putumayo is the traditional heartland of Yagé medicine in Colombia. The Inga, Camsá, Kofán, and Siona peoples have held these ceremonies here for generations. The plants are grown here. The lineages began here. The songs were composed here.
When you travel to MahaDevi, you are not visiting a retreat that imported this tradition from somewhere else. You are going to the source.
The Spirit of the Amazon
The scarlet macaw has long been associated with the spiritual life of Amazonian indigenous communities. In Putumayo, it is a living symbol of the ecosystem that makes this work possible — the jungle that grows the medicine, holds the ceremonies, and has shaped these traditions for generations.
When you come to MahaDevi, you are not just attending a retreat. You are arriving into a living landscape with its own intelligence, its own rhythms, and its own medicine.
