Mescaline is the primary active alkaloid in peyote, but peyote is not simply a mescaline delivery vehicle. The whole cactus contains dozens of alkaloids alongside mescaline. San Pedro also contains mescaline as its primary compound. In pharmacological terms the mescaline experience is similar across sources, but the ceremonial traditions, legal contexts, and conservation considerations are entirely different.
