The most serious interaction is SSRIs with ayahuasca. Ayahuasca’s harmala alkaloids are MAO inhibitors; combining them with SSRIs risks serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition. Three documented cases are described in Callaway and Grob (1998). Some clinicians also advise against combining lithium with any psychedelic. People with heart conditions should exercise caution with both medicines. Do not participate in any plant medicine ceremony while taking prescription psychiatric medications without first consulting your doctor.
